Background

Bonnie is Professor of Health Services Research and Director of the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre. She is also the Director of the NIHR CLAHRC for Greater Manchester.  Bonnie is an experienced practitioner, manager and commissioner of health services research, with a particular interest in health care organisation and delivery in general practice. She is involved in NPCRDC's workforce research programme and the Manchester-based programme of research into co-morbidity within the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. Bonnie is Chair of the management board of the University of Manchester Institute of Health Sciences that brings together the major groups engaged in health sciences research across the university and local National Health Service (NHS) organisations. She was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1996 for her contribution to the development of academic general practice.

Postgraduate Research.  Bonnie has supervised 4 PhD and 4 MD degrees to completion, and currently has 2 doctoral students.

  • Lorraine Comely is studying the role of practice managers in improving health care provision in general practice.
  •  Diane Whalley is studying the factors which attract doctors and nurses to work in underserved areas.

Bonnie welcomes enquiries from students wishing to study for a higher research degree (PhD, MD) in the organisation and delivery of primary health care services. Specific ideas for new doctoral research include:

  • Quantitative (e.g. social network analysis) and/or qualitative (e.g. ethnographic) studies of multi-disciplinary health care teams to determine how well they work together in coordinating care for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
  • Development of better tools for measuring the coordination of care among multiple health professionals and agencies.
  • Evaluation of the impact of new professional roles (e.g. general practitioners, nurses, and other "practitioners with special interests") on the quality and cost of health care delivery.

More information about postgraduate research in the primary care research group of the School of Community Medicine can be found at http://www.medicine.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/

'Closer to Home' Demonstration Sites: An Evaluation (Final Report) by NPCRDC

A key government objective in reform of the English National Health Service (NHS) is to move health services from acute hospitals into the community and so bring care closer to home. In 2006, a series of 30 demonstration sites were selected in six specialties: Dermatology, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), General Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Urology. This report summarises the experiences of these demonstration sites from an evaluation carried out between September 2006 and May 2007 by the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre of the University of Manchester and the Health Economics Facility of the University of Birmingham. The evaluation included: interviews with managers and others at all sites; qualitative case studies in 12 sites; economic case studies in 6 sites; and patient questionnaire surveys at all sites.
